Heartseed Wildschooling

Kindergarten & Elementary Forest School in Boulder County

We are a family-run alternative forest school serving kindergarten through fifth grade serving homeschool and traditional families in Louisville and Boulder, Colorado.

Our children spend their days in one wild place they come to know deeply. They return to the same trees, the same creek, and the same stretch of ground through every season until it becomes a second home. They learn which cottonwood leafs first, where the great horned owl likes to perch, and where the water rises after a spring rain. In this place, curiosity comes naturally, and reading, writing, and mathematics grow alongside it. With a 1:5 teacher-to-child ratio, every child is deeply known.

We begin with the belief that a child is already whole. Like a seed, each one already carries the shape of who they may become. Our work is not to fill them but to become good ground: the soil, water, and light that allow each child to unfold in their own season. Growth wears many faces. One child comes alive in a book. Another while building with their hands. Another when caring for a younger friend or noticing the first bird of spring. We honor all of it.

Children grow where they feel safe, known, and trusted. A child who feels deeply seen begins to take risks. They ask bigger questions. They recover from mistakes. They discover they are capable of more than they thought. Much of our work lives here, helping children navigate conflict, carry responsibility, and become part of a community where everyone belongs.

When a child is held this way, the world begins to matter to them. A hawk passing overhead changes the conversation. The first ice of winter brings the whole group to the creek. A child sits quietly long enough for a deer to step into the clearing. These moments are not interruptions to learning. They are the heart of it.

About us

Heartseed grew out of our own lives, and everything we love. We are a family, and we built this school the way you would build a home, out of care, intention, and a deep love for the natural world and the children who will inherit it.

Between us we carry years of experience in the wild and in the classroom: wilderness training and time spent living close to the land, alongside real experience teaching children and holding the day-to-day work of a school. But what matters more to us than any credential is the quality of presence we bring, moment to moment. We watch these children grow up. We know their moods and their courage and what each one is quietly working on, and we love them as our own.

Our deepest hope is to raise a community, not just run a school, a place where each child, each family, and each teacher is seen and supported, and where children grow up in relationship with each other and with the living earth.

Heart Seed Wildschool has without a doubt been a life-changing experience for our family.  Our children are healthier, stronger, and more confident in themselves and their bodies. Shaylyn and Hale  provide an exciting and enriching environment, and do such a wonderful job of mixing outdoor adventure with academic studies. It really is the best of all worlds. They go above and beyond to provide individualized care for each child, meeting them where they are at, and work hard to gently progress them.  It feels great to drop my kids off every day knowing that they are going to have a full day of fun, love, and learning!
